My name is Delicia Alarcon, I am 19 years old and I am the founder of d.Saks. d.Saks is a company that markets and sells 100% green, cotton handmade bags. The Sak comes in different colors, styles and sizes. The artisans who craft the purses in Paraguay, South America do not use any machinery in the process of manufacturing the Sak.
While living in Paraguay, my inspiration began when my mother took my brother and me to visit different towns around Paraguay. Through our travels we came across artisans that form entire families that make a living by hand crafting unique items. The varieties of products were overwhelmingly beautiful and distinct which motivated me to want to market their product around the world. By buying and selling their craft I will be helping thousands of families throughout the Paraguayan community; their income depends solely on the sale of their handcrafted products.
In June 2008 I started researching on how to start a business. I also began meeting with the artisans, designing the styles and deciding the colors. I chose the bag instead of any other handmade product because the Sak is a unique purse that can be woven into many different patterns of vibrant colors.
In May of 2009 the business launched. I started selling through my friends, word of mouth, showcases, and by posting ads on facebook. My family has been very supportive by promoting d.Saks and volunteering with the shipping and handling department.
A SAK FOR EDUCATION:
"For every d.Sak you purchase we will donate a d.Sak
filled with school supplies"
As d.Saks evolves and grows as a business my goal is to invest a percentage of the earnings to establish an educational and an apprenticeship program where new artisans will have the opportunity to learn from more experienced artisans about the tradition of crafting a Sak. This apprenticeship program will enable the artisans to maintain their culture while innovating their production and marketing system.
